Can a Silica Supplement Help Your Tendon Heal?

Silica is getting attention in recovery circles as a connective tissue supplement. Here's what the evidence actually says — and why movement still comes first.

When you are dealing with a stubborn tendon issue, it is natural to look for anything that might speed up the recovery process. You might have come across silica — also called silicon — being mentioned in fitness or wellness circles as a secret weapon for connective tissue health.

But does the science back up the hype? And should you add it to your recovery routine? Here is what I think is worth knowing.

The Role of Collagen in Tendon Healing

Tendons are primarily made of Type I collagen — dense, organized proteins built to handle high mechanical loads. For a tendon to heal and remodel, your body needs the right chemical building blocks to synthesize and cross-link this collagen effectively.

That is where certain forms of silica come into the picture. Research suggests that biologically active silicon helps activate the enzymes involved in collagen assembly, acting as a structural co-factor to support tissue resilience from the inside out.

The key word there is biologically active.

Not All Silica Is Created Equal

If you just grab a standard silica supplement off a health food store shelf, your body will absorb very little of it. To have any meaningful effect on your tendons, you need a highly bioavailable form. Two specific types have shown promise in clinical and preclinical research:

  • Choline-Stabilized Orthosilicic Acid (ch-OSA) — This formulation is stabilized so your digestive tract can actually absorb it. It has been studied for its ability to actively stimulate collagen synthesis pathways.
  • Monomethylsilanetriol (Organic Silicon) — Used in early-stage tissue models, this form has been studied for its ability to support fibroblast proliferation — the cells responsible for producing new tendon tissue.

Both are a significant step up from the generic silica you find in most multi-mineral products.

Options Available in Canada

If you are in Alberta and want to explore this, there are two reputable brands worth knowing about:

  • BioSil — The most clinically researched ch-OSA product on the market. Widely available across Canada in both liquid drops and capsules.
  • Orgono / Silicium Laboratories — Specializes in Monomethylsilanetriol, offering a highly absorbable liquid organic silicon option.

Both are available at most health food stores or online.

The Part That Actually Builds the Tendon

Here is what I want to be clear about: supplements can support the environment for healing, but they cannot do the healing on their own.

Think of silica as the raw materials delivered to a construction site. Structured, progressive loading is the blueprint that tells your body what to build — and where.

Tendons only remodel and grow stronger when they are subjected to the right kind of physical force. Progressive mechanical loading — like heavy slow resistance training — is what signals those new collagen building blocks to align properly and integrate into functional tissue.

A supplement without a loading program is like stacking lumber in a field and hoping a house appears.

Is It Worth Adding?

For most people, the evidence supporting bioavailable silica as a connective tissue supplement is promising but not definitive. It is low-risk, reasonably affordable, and may give your body a marginal advantage during active rehabilitation.

That said, I would not prioritize it over sleep, adequate protein intake, or — most importantly — consistent loading work.
